An Alabama algebra teacher is accused of having sex with a student.

37-year-old Jeannie Shiver was arrested Wednesday and charged with being a school employee engaging in a sex act or deviant sexual intercourse with a student under the age of 19 years.

It was her ninth year teaching at Central High Freshman Academy.

Police were notified by the city’s Board of Education on March 3rd that Ms. Shiver was believed to be having an inappropriate relationship with an underage student.

“It appears the school may have had information as early as February,” Police Chief Ray Smith told a local paper. “There’s information that the employee had been warned to stay away from the student sometime in February, but that information wasn’t made known to law enforcement until March. We’re still investigating that part of it.”

The school had apparently issued a warning letter to her.

School administrators are instructed under Alabama law to report possible child abuse or inappropriate relationships between students and teachers to police immediately.

“We take such allegations very seriously,” said Randy Wilkes, the superintendent said in a statement to the newspaper. “This type of behavior is totally unacceptable and will not be tolerated by the Phenix City Board of Education.”
