A man in California has entered a plea of not guilty to charges of torturing, mutilating and killing his girlfriend, whose bloodless body was found in their apartment.

35-year-old Blake Leibel, originally from Canada, is facing the death penalty if convicted of the first-degree murder charge against him in the killing of 30-year-old Iana Kasian.

Ms. Kasian’s mother had reported her missing before deputies found her dead body after forcing their way through a barricaded door that Leibel had piled furniture against

Iana appeared to have been beaten horribly at some point over the prior three days, and all the blood had drained from her lifeless body by the time she was found.

Blake Leibel was arrested at the scene.

The couple did have a child together, but authorities didn’t provide any further details about the couple’s relationship.

Just a week earlier, Leibel had been arrested on a sex-assault charge. He’d been booked on May 20th and released later that day on $100,000 bail.

He’s now being held without bail and is due back in court June 14th.
