A former middle school music teacher in Illinois has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for having sex with a 13-year-old student.
34-year-old Briana Travis pleaded guilty to one count of criminal sexual assault in Lake County court this past Wednesday.
She’d been working as a music teacher at Webster Middle School when a concerned parent contacted the police about inappropriate texts between the teacher and the student. Authorities determined that Ms. Travis was involved in the sexual relationship between June 1, 2015 and October 15, 2015.
Some of the sex acts even occurred at the school during the school day.
She’s required to serve at least 85% of the sentence before being eligible for parole, and must serve at least three years on parole. She’ll be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of her life.
Another 11 counts of criminal sexual assault and one count of aggravated criminal sex abuse were dropped as part of the plea agreement. The victim’s family agreed to the sentence.
She’ll receive 349 days credit for time served in Lake County jail, where she was held on $1 million bail.
