A New Mexico woman and her son have been charged with incest, but they say they’ll do whatever it takes to stay together do anything to stay together.

36-year-old Monica Mares had given her son, 19-year-old Caleb Peterson, up for adoption when he was just a baby.. When they met much later in life, they fell in love with each other and decided to run with it.

A neighbor had confronted them about their taboo relationship and contacted authorities. Arriving officers heard a no-regrets admission from the two of them that they were “sexually involved”. They were promptly arrested.

Ms. Peterson, herself, a mother of nine children, even said she’d be willing to give up seeing her other children just to be with her son…against a court order.

The told the Daily Mail, “He is the love of my life and I don’t want to lose him. My kids love him, my whole family does. Nothing can come between us not courts, or jail, nothing.”

“It went beyond a mother-son relationship. I never really viewed her as my mom. In certain aspects I do but mostly I don’t,” her son said.

He continued that their relationship never felt wrong. He felt that it was a normal “romantic relationship” and says he wants to raise awareness about Genetic Sexual Attraction (GSA) relationships, which are relationships where closely related adults become attracted to each another. Often, the cases are similar; a child given up for adoption, and they meet later in life.

A hearing has been set for September, and the couple face 18 months in prison if convicted.
