A Texas woman was arrested Saturday for abandonment of a child after a 3-year-old girl allegedly told cops that she was hungry multiple times, and at one point even said, “I need a beer.”

Police arrived at Shauna Lee Bennett’s home for a report that her 3-year-old daughter had been left alone. That report said the girl was dirty and covered in red bumps.

When officers knocked on the door and no one answered, they went inside.

“As soon as I entered I, was overwhelmed by the filthy state of the apartment,” one officer wrote in his report.

“There were piles of dirty and moldy dishes on the counter, stove, and sink,” it read. “There was trash on the floor and counter. There were cockroaches absolutely everywhere. The kitchen was in no way sanitary or functional.”

The girl repeatedly told officers, “I’m hungry,” and said, “I need a beer,” according to that same report.

“I had probable cause to believe that [the girl] had not been fed, washed, or provided with any type of general medical care or treatment for an unsafe amount of time.”

The little girl was placed with Children’s Protective Services, and Bennett was being held Monday morning in the Lubbock County Detention Center on a $15,000 bond.
