A total of 10 defendants are now behind bars after brutally beating multiple African-American men, as well as running over and killing one of them afterward. All of the victims were targeted based solely on the color of their skin.
Thursday, hearings were held for the remaining two – two women, who were part of a sick search party of sorts, that went looking specifically for African-American males to assault.
Shelbie Brooke Richards, 21, and Sarah Adelia Graves, 22, round up the last of the perpetrators of these unspeakable crimes. They were both riding in the truck that quite intentionally ran over and killed 47-year-old James Craig Anderson in Jackson, Mississippi in 2011.
The group referred to Jackson as ‘Jafrica’ and repeatedly scoured every corner of the city looking for primarily homeless and/or drunk victims. Both of them have admitted that they helped find and recruit people at a party to join in their twisted plans.
Shelbie also copped to encouraging her friend, Deryl Paul Dedmon, to beat James Anderson when they arrived in a hotel parking lot. Then, as Deryl returned to the truck, Shelbie yelled a racial slur at the victim and talked Deryl into running over him. She further admitted that she had lied to police detectives about the the events and her participation in them.

Surveillance video from a nearby hotel captured a Ford truck backing up and then lunging forward at James. His shirt is briefly illuminated by the headlights before he disappear behind and under the truck, running him over near a curb.

All 10 assailants pleaded guilty to their roles in other beatings; one being the assault of a man near a golf course, another being the beating of a man who had tried to sell them drugs, others were various and random attacks on passersby using beer bottles and a slingshot. They further pleaded guilty to a failed attempt to run over yet another one. Besides Mr. Anderson, none of the other victims were ever identified, and all were black.

Shelbie was sentenced to eight years in prison on charges of conspiracy to commit a hate crime and concealing it by lying to police. Sarah Graves was sentenced to five years in prison for conspiracy to commit a hate crime. Six different males, all white, were sentenced to prison with stints ranging from four to 50 years. And two more white males are still awaiting sentencing.
