The 53-year-old woman who was slashed in her neck in Brooklyn was targeted for being white, the perpetrator told police.

25-year-old Gregory Alfred said, “I cut her because she was white” to police after he was arrested at his mother’s New Jersey home over the weekend.

The victim, Janina Popko, was walking down the street around 9:45 a.m. on March 10th when Alfred approached her wearing an American flag bandana on his face.

He then inexplicably slashed her across the back of the neck, and ran away.

The deep gash the attack left behind required 13 stitches to close.

NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said during a press conference, “He’s a very disturbed young man.”

Alfred’s own mother turned him in after seeing a broadcast about the New York Police Department’s search for him.

He has over 20 prior arrests and is expected to be extradited to New York on assault and hate crime charges.
