A California man has been arrested after being accused of swinging a rabbit by the ears and then setting it on fire.
Police were called after witnesses reported the incident, but by the time officers arrived, the suspect had fled on a bicycle.
They later found and arrested 29-year-old Juan Lemus. He claimed the rabbit had been dead already when he found it, and that he’d set paper on fire, not the rabbit.
Police actually found the rabbit’s body and had it checked.
“The veterinary technicians examined and X-rayed the rabbit. It was determined the cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head,” according to the authorities.
He was arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty, arson and burglary.
