Mubashra Uddin, 19, allegedly dropped her baby, who was just minutes old, out of an 8th-story window because she heard her own mother approaching and was afraid of how her family would react.
The baby was found still breathing in the grass below the Chicago high-rise apartment building Wednesday night.
She’d given birth to the 7-pound, 11-ounce baby girl around 11:20 p.m. that night, but hadn’t told her Pakistani Muslim parents that she’d ever been pregnant. She just knew they’d see it as a dishonor to the family.
She hid the pregnancy using loose clothing, and only her boyfriend, the father of the baby, and a friend knew about it.
When police were called after a passerby found the child at about 11:45 p.m., they investigated and eventually found bloody sheets and a pair of scissors in the girl’s room, which she shares with her younger sister.
The baby died of its injuries a short time later – roughly 12:25 a.m. The injuries included multiple fractures to the child’s skull, spine and ribs.
In a sad case of irony, her family is actually standing by her, according to the teen mother’s lawyer, Adam Sheppard.
Mubashra Uddin has been charged with first-degree murder and is being held without bail.
Judge Peggy Chiampas said during a hearing on Saturday that the family circumstances that played into the infant’s death would be considered, according to the Chicago Tribune.
