29-year-old John Berry was fatally shot by an officer of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in Lakewood, California. The deputies were responding to a call about a man acting strange. He apparently failed to take medication for an undisclosed condition.

When they arrived on the scene, the officers made numerous attempts to get him out of the car, and they tried different levels of non-lethal force to subdue him, but he still refused. Berry trapped a deputy’s legs between his car and one of the radio cars.

Berry continued his attempts to operate the vehicle, placing at least one deputy’s life in immediate danger, and that is when the shooting occurred.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. The officer’s legs were not crushed, but he did sustain bruising and swelling.

The department revealed that the investigation of the shooting is still ongoing.
