A Florida man has been arrested and charged after authorities say he hanged his mother’s dog from a tree after she told him to get a job.

24-year-old David Rivera threatened to commit suicide during an eight-hour standoff with Volusia County Sheriff’s deputies on Thursday.

When officers responded to the home, his mother told them she’d been arguing with him and telling him he would have to move out if he didn’t find a job. During that argument, she says, he hanged her 5-year-old Chihuahua from a tree using a dog chain.

He then climbed 30 feet into a tree and looped a metal cable around his neck and threatened to jump. He eventually surrendered.

He’s now in jail on a $2,000 bond.
