Marion County woman faces a first-degree murder charge after she hid drugs in her vagina and smuggled them into jail, where a fellow inmate died after ingesting them, authorities said Tuesday.
Jeniffer Lane Patrick, 24, of Summerfield was arrested on drug charges Sept. 7, according to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. Surveillance video from a holding cell at the jail showed Patrick handing something to inmate Lorraine Gardner, deputies said.
Gardner, 22, held the substance to her face and quickly showed signs of distress, authorities said. She became unresponsive, and jail officials were not able to resuscitate her.
The medical examiner determined that Gardner died from a mix of heroin and fentanyl.
Detectives reviewed jail video and phone calls between Patrick and her boyfriend, 49-year-old Scott Derringer, after the incident. They said both made incriminating statements.
Patrick also was charged with smuggling contraband into a detention facility and possession of heroin. She is being held without bond at the Marion County Jail.
Derringer was charged with solicitation to possess fentanyl.
